What Colorado Humane Societies Are Animal Shelters For Waiving Fees This Saturday

The parking lot was packed and dozens of people were lined upward Saturday forenoon outside the Humane Society of Washington County earlier the start of the shelter'due south "Clear the Shelter" event.

An event that was promoted nationally by NBC and other partners, shelters beyond the country waived adoption fees for all animals in hopes of getting them into new homes.

"Today is going fabulous," humane society Primary Executive Officeholder Kimberley Intino said near 2 hours into the all-day issue.

"The astonishing staff and volunteers here at the shelter are working very hard to make this a very smooth process," Intino said. "Nosotros had a line outside the door before 9 o'clock this morning, and equally nosotros speak, animals are walking out the door to their forever home."

People nevertheless were lined up outside shortly before noon, as volunteers and staff members at the shelter helped coordinate each company's risk to go through and check out all of the cats and dogs up for adoption.

Many youngsters who came to the shelter with their parents got to play with some of the felines in the shelter's "Cat Cafe," while dogs were brought outside past volunteers to get to know their new owners.

Clarence Martz of McConnellsburg, Pa., came to the shelter with his wife and their 16-calendar month-old daughter. They adopted a 1-year-old boxer mix.

"We wanted a canis familiaris to run across if we could help my little girl to walk," Martz said. "She was built-in early and nosotros hoped this would help her to walk a piffling bit. ... I'one thousand happy they were doing this adoption thing because I couldn't afford (a dog) at the time."

Information technology's the 2nd time the canton shelter has taken function in the effect, and Intino said they started the solar day with a piffling less than 100 total animals, including a mix of cats and dogs.

Every bit of four p.m., a total of 77 adoptions had been processed, including 28 dogs — all but two at the shelter — and 49 cats and kittens, according to Ellen Taylor, the humane society's vice president of operations.

"I think it's wonderful that they're waiving the fee to assistance the pets find homes because a lot of people can afford the pet, just that fee upfront, they can't beget that," said Lori Willman of Clear Bound.

Willman said she was looking to adopt another pet to become with her Chihuahua Shih Tzu mix named Speedy.

"It's nice that they're being microchipped and the health care for the first month free and all that," she said. "I retrieve it's wonderful."
